About DistrictIQ

Free school district data for families who are buying a home or relocating.

Why we built this

When families move, school quality is one of the most important factors in choosing a neighborhood. That information is scattered across government websites, buried in PDFs, or locked behind expensive platforms. DistrictIQ puts it all in one place, for free, for every school district in the country.

What you get

  • District enrollment, student-teacher ratio, and a letter grade
  • Per-pupil spending on instruction
  • 4-year graduation rate with state average benchmark
  • Interactive map of every public school in the zip code
  • School-level grades, Title I status, and charter flags
  • Works for any zip code or city in all 50 states

Data sources

All data comes from free, publicly available federal sources.

  • NCES Common Core of Data - enrollment, staffing, locations (2022-23)
  • Urban Institute Education Data Portal - spending (2020) and grad rates (2019)
  • OpenStreetMap and Nominatim - city geocoding and map tiles
  • U.S. Census Bureau - zip code resolution for city searches

Limitations to know

Federal education data is typically 1-3 years behind the current school year. District grades are based on student-teacher ratio only and are a starting point for research, not a comprehensive score. Always verify current information directly with the district before making a housing decision.
